The tragic irony of this overt racism is that the "Secret of our Success" (Joseph Henrich) as a species is the cultural learning we are able to acquire through generations, combined with an ability to be eusocial -- super cooperators. When Europe stopped fighting with each other, prosperity and security mushroomed. And in the States, historically, we have kept expanding the pool of people who can be "white" to include formerly excluded groups: Slavs, Italians, even Irish people, and Jews, and have prospered in turn. But somehow the line is drawn at color, once a certain border of hue, darker than "olive-skinned" is crossed. Why we cannot learn to cooperate across this border, I don't know, but it may be our undoing as a unified country.
