I saw a comment at one point that Walz resonates with a lot of people who have lost their dads (uncles, grandpas, etc.) to Fox News. It's a bit like having those figures back without the poison. We all want to have Thanksgiving without the battle of the uncles. Or maybe we'd like to entertain the idea that someone in authority might actually want to do the right thing. Perhaps that's why he is popular among the younger crowd.
