Our Faith & Democracy Tour, Stop #3 - Sharing Our Event in Atlanta
What is it going to take to live out an authentic Christian faith that supports a vision of a pluralistic democracy?
On November 17th, The Convocation Unscripted team rolled into Atlanta for our third Faith & Democracy Tour stop, after previous events at First Baptist Church in Greensboro, NC, and Dayspring United Methodist Church in Tempe, AZ. It was an energizing night at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church with great music, inspiring conversations, and a packed house of like-minded people who wanted to celebrate—and think seriously about what it is now going to take to protect and live out—an authentic Christian faith that supports a vision of a pluralistic democracy. Dear Convocation Unscripted community,
This morning Walmart feels so emboldened by Trump and Project 2025: Walmart is canceling their DEI policy, and they will no longer support LGBTQ . They call Lowe’s woke policy.
I am going to shop only at Target and Lowe's. I will not shop at Walmart or Home Depot.
Robby's reiteration of lines from the songs performed that night in Atlanta, one about the cost to our children, echoed lines from James Russell Lowell's (founding editor of The Atlantic) poem that used to be in our hymnbooks:
We see dimly in the Present what is small and what is great,
Slow of faith how weak an arm may turn the iron helm of fate,
But the soul is still oracular; amid the market's din,
List the ominous stern whisper from the Delphic cave within,—
"They enslave their children's children who make compromise with sin."
Slavery, the earth-born Cyclops, fellest of the giant brood,
Sons of brutish Force and Darkness, who have drenched the earth with blood,
Famished in his self-made desert, blinded by our purer day,
Gropes in yet unblasted regions for his miserable prey;—
Shall we guide his gory fingers where our helpless children play?
Really, the entire 19 stanzas inspires me to not shrink away from The Present Crisis we're facing.
